About the sheep who provide the milk
The Flock
The flock grazes in an area known as ‘The Dunster Deer Park’. The sheep were moved there in 2004 and the flock has excelled on the green pastures and leys established on the farm.
Breeding
Friesland ewes give high milk yields - and a larger litter size. Polled Dorset ewes have the natural ability to lamb at any time of the year and they also produce milk with high solids. We rear all our own replacements using a crossing system of the two breeds, all the lambs are reared on their mothers and then fed on grass and home produced feeds.
Feeding
Making the best use of, fresh pasture, home grown feeds, no GMO’s and farm produced manures ensures that the milk is of the highest quality.
Summer grazing is based on medium term leys and pastures with a high proportion of white and red clover. This improves the feed quality and reduces the need for inorganic fertilisers.
During the winter, the milking flocks are housed on fresh straw beds and are fed on mainly home sourced feeds.
Winter feed includes a mixture of: Grass silage, Hay, Maize silage, Barley, Wheat, Peas.
